MIDLAND OUTDOOR PAINTERS

Midland Outdoor Painters (MOP) is an informal group of artists who come together to paint "en plein air" and to offer support and get helpful criticism of their work. This blog has been set up to inform participants in Midland Outdoor Painters of recent activities on a weekly basis. The group meets every Saturday, rain or shine from 9AM to about 11AM. You are welcome to join us with any medium; sketchbook, oils, pastels, watercolor, pen and ink, or just to watch. ALL SKILL LEVELS ARE WELCOME. The painting location will be posted here every preceding Thursday by the "location master", a position currently held by Priscilla Olson. She will also email the location to those who choose to be on the MOP mailing list. If anyone has ideas for other places they'd like to paint on future Saturdays, please let Priscilla know by the Wednesday night prior. To be added to the list, enter your email where it says "Follow by Email" or, if you have questions, contact Priscilla at artofpriscilla@att.net

MOP LOCATION: Saturday, June 30

For the roses!  We'll meet again at the Dow Gardens' rose gardens.  And again, 20% chance of rain, but at the gardens, we can find shelter under which to paint, though it probably won't afford a view of the flowers.  But beauty surrounds us, so there is never a lack of subject matter.   See you there!

MOP-UPdate: Saturday, June 23

A day at the roses.  A wonderful place to spend a bright summer morning!  The group will meet here again next week.

MOP LOCATION: Saturday June 23

This Saturday we will meet at the Rose Garden at Dow Gardens.  The admission to the gardens is $5.00, and it opens promptly at 9am.  There is a huge variety of roses, all of which are in full bloom.
It will be partly cloudy with 20% chance of rain.  Bring an umbrella - it will be useful to block the sun if it doesn't rain.  See you there!

MOP-UPdate: Saturday, June 16

This Saturday, five of us set up on the banks of the river to paint the Tridge.  It was a high overcast day so the light was even, with no dramatic shadows or highlights.  As we were so close to the Farmer's Market, many passers-by stopped and expressed interest in our activity.  When the sun started shining after two hours or so, the colors and shadow patterns changed enough that we finally had to packed up for the day.  None of us actually finished our pieces, but after an informal critique, we all left with an idea of how we could finish them up at home.

MOP-UPdate: Saturday, June 9

It was a beautiful "partly cloudy" morning this Saturday.  Priscilla started off by toning down a previously painted section of canvas with a wash of warm grey/brown, so the details of the prior painting wouldn't  influence her approach to the new one.

She then sketched in directional lines to establish  the composition's general movement  and placement.

The next step was to fill in the areas with distinct color masses.

Then comes the very  engrossing process of nuancing the color, value and temperature and manipulating the edges where these changes occur, to arrive at a finished statement of the landscape and the moment in time that she was there experiencing it!

Comments welcome!  The brushwork seems a little too active for the subject and key areas need more definition.  It could use more work, or it could be used as a color study for a larger, more definitive piece. What do you think?

LOCATION FOR SATURDAY, JUNE 9

We'll be meeting at the shelter and parking lot near Peeper's Pond at the Chippewa Nature Center.  It will be nice and warm, with only 20% chance of rain.  This is a divine place to spend a morning, with a variety of options of where to set up.  The sky is in full view and will be interesting to paint from the shelter if it rains, and the view from across the fields in the full sun is beautiful!

MOP-UPdate, Saturday, June 2

Attendance DOUBLED this week! Priscilla was joined by Cat at about 10 with her pencils and sketchbook. She was thinking about packing up, after spending an hour chasing interesting (but rapidly moving) cloud formations around with her brush!  When Cat joined her they both spent a productive hour or so painting, drawing, and discussing ways of depicting trees in pencil.
"This is FUN!  I don't care what ANYONE says!"

This is the painting Priscilla worked on today.  She put finishing touches on it later in the studio. The objective here was to "use gobs of paint,  apply it loosely, and don't end up with a muddy mess!"
