MIDLAND OUTDOOR PAINTERS

Midland Outdoor Painters (MOP) is an informal group of artists who come together to paint "en plein air" and to offer support and get helpful criticism of their work. This blog has been set up to inform participants in Midland Outdoor Painters of recent activities on a weekly basis. The group meets every Saturday, rain or shine from 9AM to about 11AM. You are welcome to join us with any medium; sketchbook, oils, pastels, watercolor, pen and ink, or just to watch. ALL SKILL LEVELS ARE WELCOME. The painting location will be posted here every preceding Thursday by the "location master", a position currently held by Priscilla Olson. She will also email the location to those who choose to be on the MOP mailing list. If anyone has ideas for other places they'd like to paint on future Saturdays, please let Priscilla know by the Wednesday night prior. To be added to the list, enter your email where it says "Follow by Email" or, if you have questions, contact Priscilla at artofpriscilla@att.net

MOP LOCATION: June 1

Sorry I'm posting so late.  All this spring planting!  Let's meet down by the Farmer's Market on Saturday, just between the Market and the river, looking toward the Tridge.

Here are a few just finished sketches from last fall and last week.

"Main Street, Midland"  from the corner of Ashman and Main across from Pizza Sams.

"first greens of summer"  Looking toward Dan Dan's from Grove Park.

MOP-UPdate: Saturday May 25

We had a wonderful sunny morning in Grove Park.  It soon became too warm for our ear-muffs and winter coats. Silly us!

Donna set up in the shade, where she could avoid the full sun on her work.

When she blocks in the grass, this will really come together.

Priscilla has an umbrella that often takes the place of a tree for shade.  If she were painting with the sun on the canvas, her values would become too dark.

We were delighted when area plein air painter Alan Maciag stopped by to visit.

Priscilla got far enough to start adding some interest and texture before it was time to pack up.

MOP LOCATION: Saturday, May 25

Hi all,

Sorry no MOP-UPdate last week.  Nothing to show and/or tell!  This week we'll meet again at Grove Park.  Same time, same place as last week.  (See prior post.)  It promises to be partly sunny with a high of 68.  Here's hoping!

MOP LOCATION: Saturday, May 18

We'll meet at Grove Park in Midland, on E. Grove St. between Ashman and Rodd. (See map below.)  It may be raining, but there is a picnic shelter there where we can paint.  The best parking is on Grove, right in front of the park.  There are some good views of houses as well as some interesting trees and a playground.  See you there!

Priscilla did this sketch this morning, facing Dan Dan's from the middle of the park. 6" x 8" oil on panel.

MOP-UPdate: Saturday, May 11

Well, this first Saturday was still a little cold and overcast,
but we were still up for it!  We each chose a view
across the street from the H Hotel.

Priscilla started her painting with a rough drawing to establish the concept,
and also to explore the scale of the subject on the canvas,
as well as to nail the perspective before beginning to paint.

Vicki's palette and in-progress painting of Pizza Sam's.

Priscilla got just as far as blocking in the color shapes
before her fingers got too cold and she had to pack up.
This one will be finished in the studio.

Priscilla had quit by the time a friend stopped by.
Vicki continued working for a while more.
A morning well spent!

MOP LOCATION: Saturday, May 11

Happy Spring everyone!

Our first painting location for this season is at or near the intersection of Ashman and Main.  It may be a little cold and rainy, so dress sensibly.  Set up wherever you like to paint, and then we'll meet right in front of Pizza Sams at about 11 for a short critique or discussion.
